Texas hold’em is arguably the
most popular form of poker in
today’s culture – in fact the
game of Texas hold’em has
become so popular that the use
of just the term “poker” often
refers to a game of Texas
hold’em. And while the origins
of the game of poker itself
may be a controversial
subject, Texas hold’em
originated in the United
States and right in the state
of Texas. The precise
time-frame that the game
developed is unknown but it
officially made its debut into
the national gambling market
in Las Vegas in 1967. Up until
that point the game was
largely contained to the state
of Texas, but several avid
hold’em players took the game
to Vegas with the knowledge
that this form of poker had
the ability to really catch
on.
Though the game got
off to a rocky start in Las
Vegas for about a decade, the
game certainly has caught on –
Texas hold’em is the signature
game of the World Series of
Poker. Many of the original
hold’em players back in 1967
noted that the ability to
strategize throughout the game
and bet four times rather than
two made this game standout
from the other poker game
variations. Crandell Addington
was one of the original three
poker hold’em players (Addington,
Doyle Brunson, and Amarillo
Slim) to bring the game to Las
Vegas, he dubbed this game the
“thinking man’s game” because
of some of the game’s key
differences from the other
variations of poker gambling.
Texas hold’em is a
community based form of poker
and most notably, the game has
four opportunities for the
players to bet on their hands
– this is the main reason why
the game allows for strategy.
Players are not only able to
gauge their own hands against
others at the table, but the
object the game (and indeed
the key to winning the pot)
lies in the ability of a
hold’em player to fold or win
right hands, win the right
pots, and all of this at the
most mathematically
advantageous point within the
game. Like all forms of poker
gambling, hold’em also
involves a large dose of
psychology to the game as
players watch the other
players to gauge reactions and
look for a player’s tell (a
subtle mannerism or behavior
that gives a clue to the
player and the player’s
assessment of his own hand).
Besides just the increased
betting in hold’em the
community card aspect of the
game is a large reason why
players are able to strategize
throughout the game. The
debate between skill and
chance is prominent all over
the world – some nations have
banned all forms of poker
gambling, including Texas
hold’em, because the game is
considered gambling. Poker
professionals and many
industry analysts argue
instead that poker is a game
of skill more than chance and
should be excluded from
nation-wide gambling bans.
This debate has become
more prominent as poker
gambling grows on the
internet. Online poker surged
in global popularity in the
early part of the 21st Century
as players were able to access
hold’em through the internet
and right on their personal
computers. Texas Hold’em in
particular saw a huge surge in
the past decade alone because
of increased exposure of the
game in the entertainment
industry. Most notably, the
1998 film Rounders featured
Texas hold’em extensively –
many critics even obseve that
this movie romanticized this
form of poker. Additionally,
the World Series of Poker is
now a nationally televised
event and this multi-month
event is covered extensively
by the media and radio.
Gamblers all over the world
and particularly in the United
States have had contributed to
the huge surge in popularity
of this form of poker
gambling.
