What a President Obama Would Mean to the Online Gambling Industry
While the American people voted to elect Barack Obama in what some political pundits are calling a landslide election, the jury is still out on what this particular national development will mean for the online gambling industry.
While vice president-elect Joe Biden’s own son Hunter has worked as a lobbyist for Party Gambling, it may still be too early to call which way an Obama presidency will push the legislation. A chairman for the House Financial Services Committee has reported that Obama’s presidency will have a substantial impact on the industry.
While the Republicans during the Bush administration have made a concerted effort to push through hasty legislation that aims at regulating the industry in drastic ways, the Democrats who will be running majorities in both the Senate and the House will have to work on undoing the damage before anything else can happen.
Many democrats have already been working on legislation that will work, bit by bit toward making online gambling a legal activity. But Republicans, who have seemingly gone out of their way to claim the goal of making online gambling illegal a critical part of its platform, will do everything they can to make that job exceedingly difficult. With all of the other far more important problems facing the nation today, Republicans have come under some scrutiny for focusing their energies on something that should be regarded as more of a periphery issue.
Either way, it will be interesting to see what happens when the democrats take over control of the White House, the Senate and the House in 2009. Obama, who has admitted that he loves the game of poker, has indicated that he would approve a study that searched out concrete ideas on the implications of legalizing online gambling.
